Resumen

The telecommunications industry has undergone a significant transformation as mobile operators’ data services have increasingly replaced traditional voice-based revenue models. Within this evolving landscape, mobile handsets have emerged as a critical component of telecom operators’ revenue structures, particularly in emerging markets. This study examines the dual role of mobile handsets as both enablers of revenue growth and sources of operational and financial challenges. A mixed-methods research design is employed, integrating quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires with qualitative insights derived from expert interviews. The analysis focuses on the relationship between handset adoption and revenue outcomes, including average revenue per user (ARPU) influenced by data services, accessories, and add-on offerings, as well as the operational and financial risks associated with handset financing, subsidy, and trade-in programs.  The findings indicate that handset adoption is strongly associated with sustained demand for mobile data services and enhanced revenue generation when supported by bundled offerings and flexible affordability mechanisms, such as installment plans and equated monthly installment (EMI) options. Additionally, buy-back and upgrade programs positively influence handset replacement behavior by reducing affordability constraints. However, these initiatives also introduce operational complexity and financial risk, which can moderate their overall revenue impact. This study contributes to the academic understanding of handset-centric revenue models in emerging markets without offering prescriptive managerial recommendations.
